To Snap or Not to Snap?

Monday, 10 June 2013

The link above is a story in which the Today Show featured Snap Chat. I happened to come across it and thought that it would be an interesting thing to blog about.
Have you heard of it? Do you love it? Do you use it? And why or why not?
I have had several people bring this up in conversation throughout the last week (one of which was a total stranger that I sat next to on the way to New York). I am hoping to get a conversation going with people of all opinions.
It took me forever to sign up for an Instagram account. It was in a moment of curiosity and absolute boredom, but I do enjoy it for the most part. It's not something that really has much of a point, but it is fun to see little pieces from people's lives. I enjoy it, but I could live without it. I imagine Snap Chat being something like that, except that you only have the photo for about 9 seconds. Is that right? I am not trying to mock the medium or act like I hate social media. That's not the case at all. I think it is a fascinating phenomenon. I would like to better understand it.

So, my dear friends and peeps- Please post a comment or send me an email. Let me know what you think. Whether or not you have used the app before, chances are you probably have an opinion. And chances are, I would LOVE to hear it!

Are there types of social media that you don't understand? If you could create the perfect medium for socializing, what would it be like?

  1. Snap Chat took me a long time to start using. Which is weird, because I'm kind of social media crazed. I just didn't find any value in it and thought it was kind of annoying. BUT my little brothers are on Snap Chat all the time, so I redownloded the app so that I could talk to them in a way that I knew they would respond to and it's actually kind of growing on me. (Taylor Swift grew on me recently too, which may or may not be relevant.)

Anyway, I kind of see Snap Chat as this weird catch 22 of communication. It adds kind of a fun element and a new way of talking, but I am suuuuper glad that I'm not in jr high worrying about whether or not my crush will snap chat me back.
